HelpPort:
  • System Backups: A regular system backup routine sometimes seems tedious. But it is easy to set up and maintain, and will save a great deal of anguish when your hard drive crashes.
  • System Recovery: If you purchase a new system that does not come with Windows or re-installation media, one of the first things you need to do is create the recovery disk. There is probably a program set up already on the system to allow you to do that. Without recovery media, should your system crash or fail, you will have to purchase a set of recovery disks from the vendor. If the system you wish to buy does not include recovery media or the means to create them, buy a different system.
  • System Maintenance: A regular system maintenance routine will help keep your system cleared of redundant files and settings, and will help your PC feel quicker longer.
  • System Protection: Be sure you are using reliable anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software. The AV and AS software should be updated regularly by the manufacturer. If you have a router, use its built-in firewall for added protection.
  • Network Security: Be sure your network and systems are secure. When you set up a new wireless router, change the admin login information and wireless security settings (and record your settings!). Default router settings are well known and your network may be wide open if you do not change the settings. An added step is to change the passwords on a periodic basis.
  • System Security: Set up and use good passwords for your system, programs, and sites you visit. The best are randomly generated using a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. The information you are protecting is only as safe as the login used to get to it. Of course, write them down and keep them in a safe place (preferrably not in a file on the PC OR taped to the monitor. It is also usually a bad idea to allow your browser to store the passwords for web sites: if someone gets into your system they will not need your passwords to access yourdata - just the web browser.

  • OpenOffice: A great alternative to Microsoft Office. It is compatible with Microsoft Office documents and offers a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and presentation manager. And it is FREE! Note, however, that OpenOffice has a built-in macro language that is NOT compatible with MS Office VBA...
  • Google Chrome: A nice alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is a very good browser that we prefer over FireFox and Opera. Give it a try...
